It is: 2016!
Hey there, lovely reader! How are you? I hope you're having a great day. What? Me? My day's going pretty well, thanks for asking. You're sweet. Anyhoodle. Today's topic is: Technology! Yes, I realize that that's a very broad topic. No, I am not going to go over every piece of technology ever invented. Just calm down, okay? Let me explain this a little better. What I'm going to do here is use my opinion--hear that? my OPINION--to write a bit about a few aspects of modern electronics and what they do for (and to) us. So actually, technology isn't the best word....but whatever. So. The first thing I'm going to discuss is websites. Specifically, websites that fall into two categories--games and social media. Games: Yeah, I'm a person that loves to play computer games. I mean, not just computer games--I love the Wii, too, for example--but that's what I'm talking about here, is computer games. There are definitely different types of games for kids/teens: there are games like MovieStarPlanet, Stardoll, and WeeWorld, which focus on fashion and communicating with others; there are games like Animal Jam (love!) that are purely fun "worlds" where users can play games and explore; and there are games like the ones you'll find on sites like coolmath_games.com, that are just simple, fun games. Personally I prefer the "worlds" (find me on Animal Jam), but it's all personal preference. However, the safest do tend to be the coolmath_games.com style--no communication. Speaking of safety: Yeah, these games are fun. But here's a warning you'll hear from most adults, and you're going to hear it from me too--BE CAREFUL. I'm serious, okay? There are....not-nice people out there. Especially on those first types of games. That's the type of danger you always hear about, right? I mean, there are BOOKS about it. Lots of them. Who R U Really? and Want to Go Private? are two examples, but there are many more. However, there's one more thing--a sort of advertising thing. Many sites--Animal Jam, Poptropica, MovieStarPlanet, Stardoll, pretty much every site--has an option to buy a membership or items or SOMETHING. Don't. Seriously. Think about it. Do you really want to waste REAL MONEY so that you can get your pet bumblebee a virtual bed? Honestly? Come on, people. But games aren't all bad. That's not what I'm saying. Keep playing, guys. It's fun! I know! Keep doing it! I'm just saying, be careful. That's all. Now. The next post will be Part 2 of the same topic, okay? Next thing on the agenda now. I'm thinking of adding a new in-every-post feature! I'm writing a story, and I'm thinking of posting a small amount in each post. Should I? One quick announcement: The book Winter comes out tomorrow! It is the conclusion to the epic Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Can you tell??) And now our book review--NEED by Joelle Charbonneau! NEED was....interesting. It was an amazing premise--a social media site that granted your wishes, no matter what the consequences were....for a price. And it started out wonderfully. The site would ask you what you wanted, you'd type it in, and it would give you a task. When you completed the task, your request would be granted. The tasks started out simple, like inviting people to the site. But when everyone was hooked, they got weirder. They would seem innocent, harmless, even goodhearted....but they could have deadly consequences. A reflection on our materialistic culture and our inability to keep our moral compass straight when our first-world-problem "needs" are on the line, this book should have been incredible. But after a brilliant start, it slowly went downhill...and fell off a CLIFF at the end. Without revealing too much, everything just got.....illogical. It was such abuse of the shock factor that it wasn't even shocking anymore. The "big reveal" confrontation scene felt forced, and during it everything just went off the rails. Also, one of my lovely Goodreads friends made a great point--this whole "damsel in distress" theme was ridiculous. Kaylee, WHY must a guy save you EVERY TIME?!? Overall, started extremely well but went down a slippery slope and crash-landed. Maybe you'll like it better than I did.....it was okay. Rating: 3.38 stars And our song: Leave a Trace by CHVRCHES! Bye, reader! Have a nice night!!
